TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Traveling to Bhutan as a tourist involves several basic requirements.
- Visa: Tourists visiting Bhutan must obtain a visa in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or through a foreign travel agent partnered with a Bhutanese operator. The operator will handle the visa process on behalf of the tourist.
- Tourist Tariff: Bhutan operates on a “High Value, Low Impact” tourism policy, which requires tourists to pay a minimum daily tariff set by the government. This tariff covers accommodation, meals, transportation, and a licensed guide. The tariff varies depending on the season and the number of travelers in the group.
- Passport: Tourists must possess a valid passport with a minimum validity of six months beyond the intended duration of stay in Bhutan.
- Entry Permit: Upon arrival at the airport or border checkpoint, tourists are required to present their visa approval letter, passport, and a copy of their visa clearance. They will receive an entry permit that allows them to travel within Bhutan.
- Travel Insurance: While not mandatory, it’s advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events during your stay in Bhutan.
- Health Precautions: Depending on your country of origin and travel history, you may need to provide proof of vaccination or undergo health screenings, especially during times of public health concerns such as pandemics.
- Respectful Clothing: Bhutan is a conservative country, and tourists are expected to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. It’s recommended to avoid wearing revealing clothing and to dress respectfully.
- Responsible Tourism: Tourists are expected to adhere to Bhutan’s principles of sustainable and responsible tourism, respecting local customs, traditions, and the environment.
It’s essential to check with the Bhutanese embassy or consulate in your country or consult with a licensed Bhutanese tour operator for the most up-to-date information on travel requirements and procedures before planning your trip to Bhutan.
