BUMDRA TREK
TREKKING TOUR / BUMDRA TREK
Bumdra Trek
The Bumdra trek stands out as one of Bhutan’s most picturesque short-duration treks, offering just two nights of camping amidst the wilderness. Its scenic vistas and terrain rival those of longer treks, promising an adventurous and unforgettable experience as you ascend towards Bumdrak, also known as the “trek of the thousand Dakinis.” Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to explore numerous caves where mythical angels once gathered. On the first day of your journey from the campsite, you’ll have the chance to visit these mystical caves, steeped in ancient legend. Bumdrak trek will end with visit of Magical Tiger nest Monastery.
Day 1: Paro to Bumdra via Sangchokor Monastery
After an early breakfast, we’ll embark on a drive to Sangchokor Monastery, followed by a visit to Shaydra, a Buddhist College, for an hour. From there, our trek to Bumdrak commences at an elevation of approximately 3,200 meters. Today’s trek will span about 5 hours, offering a pleasant walk through the forest with captivating views of the Paro valley. While the trail involves gradual steep climbs, the high elevation may leave you feeling breathless. Our campsite, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,868 meters, will be near the Bumdrak Monastery. Legend has it that this monastery was blessed by 1,000 Dakinis who meditated in a nearby cave, giving rise to the name Bumdrak. We’ll spend the night camping at Bumdrak.
Day 2: Bumdra Halt
After a leisurely breakfast at Bumdrak, we’ll explore the surroundings by hiking around the Bumdrak meditation hermitage and sacred cave. We’ll then ascend to a ridge for the finest panoramic views of the Himalayas in Bhutan. Lunch will be served at the campsite, followed by an opportunity to unwind and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the area for the remainder of the day.
Day 3: Bumdra to Paro via Tigernest
After breakfast, we’ll begin our descent towards the Paro valley, following a mostly downhill trail through a mixed conifer forest of Rhododendron, fir, and juniper trees. The trek to Ugyentsemo, a picturesque location overlooking the valley, will take approximately 2 hours. En route to Tiger’s Nest, you’ll have the option to visit the Machig Labdron Temple nestled within a cave. The highlight of the day is the visit to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as Tiger’s Nest, perched dramatically on a steep rock face at 9,678 feet. This sacred site holds immense significance as one of Bhutan’s most important pilgrimage destinations. Before reaching Taktsang, you’ll catch sight of another monastery, Ugyen Tsemo, situated about 200 meters above Taktsang. Upon arrival at the base of Tiger’s Nest, a picnic lunch will be provided by our staff. Finally, you’ll be driven to your hotel in Paro for check-in and an overnight stay.
